Advantages Of Flexible Packaging and Ebeam Technology

Flexible Packaging and Electron Beam Advantages

ESIblog (1).jpg

The overall use of flexible packaging is trending upwards and for good reason; flexibles are more environmentally friendly, can make use of the latest Electron Beam (Ebeam) technology, and overall increase supply chain efficiencies. According to a study by the Flexible Packaging Association (FPA), 31% of brand owners expect to "switch entirely to or to a higher mix of flexible packaging." Studies also show that consumers are more prone to choose an item that is packaged in a flexible container over something that is not. Consumer preference and improved efficiencies are driving brands around the world to move their products to flexible packaging.

Benefits for Brands

Supply Chain Efficiencies

Sturdy, yet easy to open and close, flexibles can be easily palletized, dramatically increasing packaging speed and lowering transportation costs. Flexibles often have carrying handles and other packaging features built into the design, minimizing packaging weight and size.

When paired with Ebeam printing and curing, you receive reduced overall production time of the product as a whole. The FPA study indicated that 57% of brand owners who increased flexible packaging were able to lower their costs of production.

With consumers choosing flexibles over rigids and other types of packaging, and EB flexibles being food safe and FDA approved, it has become the top option for food brands.

Environmentally Friendly

Flexible packaging means less waste than rigid and older packaging products while improving the design as a whole. Flexibles get rid of any need for a box or rigid outer, and Ebeam inks allow high-quality printing directly on the flexible material. Brands can store the same amount of product in a more appealing package and save material costs along the way. Lastly, flexibles can have built-in resealable openings, keeping items fresh longer and generating less food waste.

Consumers Prefer Flexible

For brands looking to boost sales and evolve their product line into the future, flexible packaging becomes the obvious choice. A FlexPack study found that, when asked about the impact on sales after switching to flexible, 55% of brand owners reported seeing a sales increase.

This same study also examined consumer behavior and found that 71% of consumers prefer flexible packaging over the same product in non-flexible packaging. The study showed that consumers:

  • Are willing to spend more on flexible packaging

  • Have a positive connotation associated with flexibles

  • Believe that there are benefits to storing food in flexible over non-flexible

  • Like the ability to reseal, ease of storing, and ease of opening
